Servant leadership is a leadership philosophy that focuses on the growth and well-being of the people being led, as well as the community and environment in which the organization operates. The term "servant leadership" was coined by Robert K. Greenleaf in his essay "The Servant as Leader" published in 1970.

Greenleaf outlined ten characteristics of a servant-leader, but four of these characteristics are particularly important and widely accepted as the core elements of servant leadership: Element 1: Listening A servant leader values and practices deep, active listening. They listen to understand the needs, concerns, ideas, and perspectives of their team members, customers, and other stakeholders. This fosters trust, respect, and open communication. Element 2: Empathy A servant leader demonstrates empathy by seeking to understand the emotions, feelings, and experiences of their team members. They recognize that each person has unique challenges and strengths, and they respond with compassion and support. Element 3: Healing A servant leader strives to create a healing environment where team members feel safe, supported, and encouraged to grow both personally and professionally. They understand that healing is a continuous process and are committed to addressing the emotional, mental, and physical well-being of their team members. Element 4: Awareness A servant leader has a strong sense of self-awareness and understands how their behavior and decisions impact others. They are also aware of the broader context in which their organization operates, including social, environmental, and ethical considerations. This awareness enables them to make more informed, responsible, and impactful decisions.
