FIVE FUNCTIONS 2 The Five Functions of Effective Management : Their Applications in Business In 2012, Carl's Jr. reported a total revenue of $1.3 billion in sales (CKE, 2012). The QSR magazine (2010) ranks Carl's Jr. at number 23 in 2010, with its predominant sales being of burgers. Carl's Jr's charbroiled hamburgers are a family favorite in the United States, and their pricing is very reasonable when taken in conjunction with the size of their products. Without the careful use of the five functions of effective management (planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling), Carl's Jr. would not keep up with changing consumer trends at their individual stores. Working for Carl's Jr. is a very rewarding experience; employees are encouraged to treat their customers as members of the family, employee - manager relations are very cordial, and the management team is very firm, yet approachable, when matters of discipline or customer service improvements are the topic at team meetings. While tips are frowned on in the fast food category, employees are allowed to accept them when offered, but never allowed to solicit tips. Carl's Jr. is always innovating, such as their new 'All - Natural Burger,' a fast food first, in that the beef is grass - fed and free - range, with no added hormones, steroids, or antibiotics. They are keeping with the current 'healthy' trend, and thus they keep ahead of their competitors, successfully attracting the hipster and/or vegan/vegetarian customers. Carl's Jr. has excellent planning systems and organizational standards, as well as having the ability to closely watch social trends and economic changes through the use of social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Social trends affect fads and fashions, which result in new opportunities to sell products. Economic conditions shift purchasing habits. A growing or healthy economy often leads to increased sales by individual companies.
