Trends in Policing: Development, Operations, and the Role of Technology inShaping the FutureWhat are the current trends regarding the development and operation of policing? How doestrending (past, present, and future) affect the ability to plan fordevelopment and operationalaspects of policing? How can we improve the reliability of trending analysis to better plan forthe future? Explain.Current trends regarding the development and operations of policing include more training, more in-depth evaluations and advance meeting amongst the command staff such ascompstat. Compstat is one of the newer methods of evaluating development and operations ofpolicing. Compstat is a form of analyzing productivity and effectiveness as a whole unit byevaluating every department. Within my police agency all of the mayors and compstatofficers from uniform, CID, Specialized units and other divisions meet with the chief orassistance chiefs. Compstat actually indicates what current trends in policing are working andwhich ones are not working. From these meeting current trends will either be given the greenlight to continue as future trends or put to a stop, or altercations will be made to it. Thesemeetings will hold each member of the command staff accountable for their departmentwhich will provide a form of motivation to reach the higher level of excellences. Past, presentand future trends will be developed and analyzed with every compstat meetings and thenthose majors will pass the information to the levels of supervision and trickle down to theofficers. From personal experience this form of analyzing has several benefits becausenothing is set in stone since it is constantly evaluated. Within my department a lot of thoughtis brought into the equation when making a decision that will effect the department becauseof the ‘meeting of the minds” which I think is the right way to go about it since there areofficer from 5 years to 30 years of experience in those meetings.Response 2The current trends in policing are moving into a digital age. With everybody facebooking andhaving smartphone's the need for training in this aria has been realized. The training andoperations have also given us things like compstat witch is a program police use to predictarias of crime helping to form more effective patrol routes.Policing has gone from the start of policing being just a response to problems if they werelucky and at this time police did not abide by any standards and were corrupt. Wehavemoved into arias from hear to community policing and trying to be proactive against crime.Over years of trying to develop a game plan against crime we are still using community stilepolicing with the help of computer programs like compstat to help in this aria.
