By first meeting with resistance and afterwards gaining admission

By three distinct knocks.

What was asked from within?

Who comes here?

Mitchell J. Lowry-Lee, a poor blidn candidate who has long been in darkeness and now desires to be brought from darkenss to light by having and receiving a part of the light, rights and benefits of this worshipful lodge, erected to god and dedicated to the Holy Saints John, as all brothers and fellows have done who have gone this way before him.

What was then asked?

If this was of my own free will and accord and if i was worthy and well qualified, duly and truly prepared all of which being answered in the affirmative i was asked by what further right or benefit i expected to obtain this important privledge

The Answer?

By being a man, free born, or lawful age, bearing a tongue of good rapport and coming well recommended

What was then said?

It is well Mr. Lowry-Lee, you will wait a time with patience until the worshipful master can be informed of your request and his answer returned

What was that answer?

Enter in the name of the lord.

On your first admission into a lodge of freemasons, how were you received?

Upon the point of a sharp instrument, presented at my naked left breast

What was this to teach you?

That as this might be made an instrument of torture to my flesh so should the recollection there of be to my mind and conscious should i ever presume to reveal any of the secrets of Freemasonry, unlawfuly

Once regularly around the lodge and then to the Jr. Warden in south, the Sr. Warden in the west, and the worshipful master in the East; where the same questions were asked and like answers returned as at the door.

How did the worshipful master dispose of you?

He ordr me to be reconnected to the Sr. Warden in the west, whom would teach me to approach the east in due form

What is that due form?

Advancing one regular step with the left foot bringing the heel of the right, to the hollow of the left thereby forming a square, the body erected at the alter.

What is that due form?

Kneeling upon the naked left knee , the right extended forming a square, the left hand supporting the right resting upon the Holy Bible, Square and Compasses in which position i took upon myself the solemn obligation of an Entered Apprentice.

Repeat that obligation.

I, Mitchell James Lowry-Lee of my own free will and accord,

in the presence of almighty god and this worshipful lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons

erected to him & Dedicated to the Holy Saints John,

Do hereby and hereon, sollemnly and sincerely, promise and swear,

that i will alwas hail, forevere conceal and never reveal, the secrets, art, parts or points of the hidden mysteries of Freemasonry,

which have been, may now or shall at any Future Time, be imparted to me as such

And not to him or them until by due trial, strict examination, or lawful information i shall have found them as justly entitled to the same as I am.

I furthermore promise that I will not: WRITE, INDICT,PRINT, PAINT, STAMP, STAIN, CUT, CARVE, MARK or ENGRAVE upon anything movable or immovable under the canopy of heaven, the least sign, letter, syllable, character of the faintest resemblance there too which might become legible, or intelligible, and the secrets of Freemasonry be thereby unlawfully revealed through my unworthiness.

To all of this and these I solemnly and sincerely promise and swear without equivocation, mental reservation or secret evasion in me whatever, binding myself under no less a penalty than having my throat cut from ear to ear, my tongue torn out by its roots, and my body buried in the rough sands of the sea, a cable toes length from shore, where the tides ebb & flow, twice in twenty-four hours should i knowingly or willingly violate this my solemn obligation as an Entered Apprentice. So help me god and enable me to keep steadfast in the due performance of the same.

After your obligation what was done?

I was released from my cable-toe, being bound to the fraternity by the stronger tie of my obligation

Repeat that obligation

What was then asked?

What I most desired.

Your Answer?

Light

Brother Doe, Whence Came You?

From a Lodge of the Holy Saints John at Jerusalem

Did you receive light?

I did! By order of the worshipful master and with the assistance of the breathren

What Come you here to do?

To Learn:

To Subdue my passions

and improve myself in Freemasonry

On being brought to LIGHT, to what was your attention first directed?

To the three great LIGHTS in Freemasonry, which I was enabled to behold by aid of the representatives of the three lesser lights

What are the three great LIGHTS!

The Holy Bible, Square and Compass

How are they used?

The Holy Bible is given us as the rule and guide of our faith and practice, the square, to square our actions, and the Compasses to circumscribe our desires, and keep our passions in due bounds with all mankind, especially with a Brother Freemason.

What r the three lesser lights?

The Sun, Moon and Worshipful Master.

Than I Presume you are a Freemason?

I am so taken and accepted amongst brothers and fellows

What makes you a Freemason?

My Obligation

How are they represented?

By three burning tapers in triangular position.

How are they explained?

As the Sun rules the day, and the moon governs the night so should the worshipful master rule and govern the lodge with equal regularity and justice.

What did you then behold?

The worshipful master approaching me from the east, upon the step and under the du-guard and penal sign of an entered apprentice,

which, in token of friendship and brotherly love, extended to me his right hand, invested me with the grip and word of an Entered Apprentice, and bid me arise and salute the JR and Sr Wardens.

How do you know yourself to be a Freemason?

By having been often tried, never denied and I am willing to be tried again.

What did you next behold?

The worshipful master approaching me from the East a second time, who presented me with a Lambskin or White Leathern Apron which as he informed me is an emblem of innocence and the badge of a Freemason, more ancient than the Golden Fleece, or Roman Eagle, more honorable that the Star and Garter, or any other order that could be conferred upon me at that or any future period by king, prince, potentate, or any other person, accept he be a Freemason. He expressed the hope that I would wear it with pleasure to myself & honor to the fraternity and bid me take it to the senior warden in the West who would teach me to wear it as an Entered Apprentice.

How do Entered Apprentices wear there aprons?

With the flap turned up

How may I know you to be a Freemason?

By certain signs, a token, a word and the perfect points of entrance

Why?

At the building of King Solomon's Temple, Entered Apprentices wore their aprons with the flap turned up to prevent soiling their clothes, but we, as Free and Accepted Mason wear ours thus, mostly teaching us not to daub with untempered mortar.

How were you then disposed of?

I was conducted to the Worshipful Master in the East, who demanded of me some metallic substance, not for its intrinsic worth or value, but that it might be laid up among the archives of the lodge as a memorial that I had there been made a Freemason, but on strict search I found myself unable to comply with the demand

What was this to teach you?

A lesson in charity, which next to a belief in deity is at the foundation of Freemasonry.

What are signs?

Right angles , Horizontals, and Perpendiculars

How were you then disposed of?

I was conducted to the preparation room, invested with my clothes and in due time returned to the lodge for further instructions.

What is a token?

A certain friendly, brotherly grip where by one freemason may know another in the dark as well as in the light.

On your return, where were you placed?

In the Northeast corner of the lodge, upon the first step of Freemasonry, my body erect before the worshipful master, who informed me that I there stand as a just and perfect freemason and gave it me strictly in charge ever to walk and act as such.

Where were you made a Freemason?

In a legaly constituted lodge of ancient free and accepted masons, duly assembled in a place representing the grand floor of King Solomons temple with the Holy Bible, square & compasses and a charter from a grand lodge authorizing them to meet and work

With what were you then presented?

With the working tools of an Entered Apprentice, which are the twenty-four inch guage and the common gavel.

How are they used?

The twenty-four-inch gauge is an instrument made use of by operative masons to measure and lay out their work, but we, as Free and Accepted Freemasons, are taught to make use of it for the more noble and glorious purpose of dividing our time. Being divided into twenty-four equal parts, it is emblematic of the twenty-four hours of the day, which we are taught to divide into three equal parts, whereby are found eight hours for the service of god and a distressed worthy brother, eight for our usual vocations, and eight for refreshment and sleep.

The Common Gavel is an instrument made use of by operative masons to break off the corners of rough stones, the better to fit them for the builder’s use; but we as Free and Accepted Masons, are taught to make use of it for the more noble and glorious purpose of divesting our hearts and consciences of all the vices and superfluities of life, therby fitting our minds as living stones, for that spiritual building, that house not made with hands eternal in the heavens.

You will arise, take the step of an Entered Apprentice, give me the du-guard then penal sign, you will approach me, I hail

I conceal

What do you conceal?

All the secrets of Freemasons in freemasonry to which this token alludes?

Where were you first prepared to be made a Freemason?

In my heart.

What is this?

A grip

Of what?

Of an Entered Apprentice

Where Next?

In a room adjacent to a legally constituted lodge of freemasons

Has it a name?

It has

Will you give it to me?

I did not so receive it, nor can i so impart it.

How were you prepared?

By being divested of all metallic substances, neither naked nor clad, barefoot nor shod, hoodwinked and with a cable toe about my neck, in which condition I was conducted to a door by a friend whom I afterwards found to be a brother.

How will you dissolve of it that I may come to a knowledge of it?

I will letter it with you

Being hoodwinked, how did you know it to be a door?

By first meeting with resistance and afterwards gaining admission

Nah, you begin

I prefer that you begin
