Definition
The depression in the gingival tissue under the contact area between the lingual (palatal) papilla and the facial papilla.
The Col
V-Shaped spillway space next to the contact area of adjacent teeth, narrowest at the contact and widening toward the facial, lingual (palatal) and occlusal contacts
Embrassure
A cleft in the gingival margin usually at a mesial or distal line angle of a tooth where dental floss was repeatedly applied incorrectly. The lining of the cleft can be completely lined with epithelium.
Floss Cleft
The use of forced intermittent or steady stream of water for a cleansing or therapeutic purpose
Hydrotherapy
Flushing of a specific area or site with a stream of fluid; application of a continuous or pulsated stream of fluid to a part of the body for a cleansing or therapeutic purpose
Irrigation
The point of the delivery of the irrigation is placed in the sulcus or pocket and may reach the base of the pocket depending on its probing depth
Subgingival Irrigation

Types of Gingival Embrassure: Interdental papilla fills the gingival embrassure? | Type 1 |
Types of Gingival Embrassure: With slight-to-moderate recession of the interdental papilla? | Type 2 |
Types of Gingival Embrassure: With extensive recession or complete loss of the interdental papilla? | Type 3 |
What type of floss is good for type 2 embrassures? | Tufted Dental Floss (Super Floss) |
T/F Research has SHOWN NO DIFFERENCE in the effectiveness of waxed or unwaxed floss for biofilm removal. Effectiveness depends on how the floss is applied. | True |
When to floss? | Best results can be obtained by using floss before brushing |
T/F Wax floss gives strength and durability and can minimize breakage | True |
A sharper, then edge requires special attention to prevent injury to the gingival tissue? Thinner Floss Forcing may break the floss made of NYLON FIBERS | Unwaxed Floss |
Also called floss/yarn combation | Tufted dental Floss/Super dental floss |
Aids for flossing? | Floss holder Floss Threader Knitting Yarn Gauze Strip |
Used for pts with disabilities? | Floss holder |

Used on abutments, surfaces next to edentulous areas, or widely spaced teeth? | Gauze Strip |
Used for type 3 embrassures? | (Interdental brushes) Proxy brush |
T/F In pts with open embrasures and moderate to serve attachment loss, the interdental brush is more effective than floss | True |
Purpose of oral irrigation? | to reduce the bacteria and inflammatory mediators that lead to perio infection |
