DNA Replication Labeling
These proteins attach to the separated DNA strands during replication to prevent them from re-annealing or forming secondary structures. They stabilize the single-stranded DNA, allowing it to serve as a template for synthesis.
Single Stranded Binding Protein
Binds to and stabilizes single-stranded DNA until it can be used as a template.

Key Terms
Single Stranded Binding Protein
Binds to and stabilizes single-stranded DNA until it can be used as a template.
Helicase
An enzyme that unwinds the DNA double helix during DNA replication
Okazaki Fragment
short segment of DNA synthesized discontinuously in small segments in the 3' to 5' direction by DNA polymerase
Leading Strand
The new continuous complementary DNA strand synthesized along the template strand in the mandatory 5' to 3' direction.
Topoisomerase
corrects "overwinding" ahead of replication forks by breaking, swiveling, and rejoining DNA strands
Primase
An enzyme that creates a short RNA primer for initiation of DNA replication.
