Network+ N10-009 Encapsulation and Decapsulation
Encapsulation is the process where each layer in the OSI model wraps data with its own header—and sometimes a trailer—before passing it down to the next layer; this prepares the data for transmission and enables proper routing, addressing, and error checking. ([turn0search0], [turn0search22])
Encapsulation
The process of putting headers (and trailers) around some data.
Key Terms
Encapsulation
The process of putting headers (and trailers) around some data.
Protocol Data Unit (PDU)
A single unit of information transmitted in a computer network.
FIN (Finished)
Used to tear down the virtual connections created using the three-wey handshake and the SYN flag.
SYN (Synchronization)
Used to synchronize connection during the three-way hadnshake.
RST (Reset)
Used when a client or server receives a packet that it was not expecting during the current connection.
ACK (Acknowledgment)
Used during the three-way handshake, but also used to acknowledge the successfull receipt of packets.
