Mitosis produces two genetically identical daughter cells. During interphase, DNA is replicated. In prophase, chromosomes condense, spindle fibres form, and the nuclear envelope disintegrates, preparing the cell for division.

  1. Chromosomes condense and are now visible when stained

  3. Spindle fibres begin to emerge from the centrosomes

  4. The nuclear envelope breaks down into small vesicles

Describe metaphase

  1. Centrosomes reach opposite poles

  2. Spindle fibres continue to extend from centrosomes

  3. Chromosomes line up at the equator of the spindle

  4. Spindle fibres reach the chromosomes and attach to the centromeres

Describe anaphase

  1. The sister chromatids separate at the centromere (the centromere divides in two)

BINARY FISSION
1. Circular DNA molecule replicates and both copies attach to the cell membrane

4. A new cell wall forms between the molecules of DNA dividing the original cell into two identical daughter cells each with a singular copy of DNA and many plasmids
