Applying the Five Functions of Management to Personal Life and Leadership 2) View the video Making it All Work. Explain the parallels of the concepts presented in the video to the five functions of management. Explain how the five functions of management can help you in your personal life. How could the concepts presented make you a better leader? Respond substantively to two other learners. After hearing watching the video clip, David Allen makes it clear that managing a business successfully is very similar to managing your life successfully. There are many parallels of his ideas and the five functions of management in our textbook. The five functions of management are: planning, organizing, staffing, leading and controlling. Organizations use planning to choose proper goals and identify realistic ways to best meet those goals, Allen talks about taking charge of everyday commitments. Organizing establishes who is going to work together and what goal are they focused on; Allen talks about perspective of where to place certain commitments on the map of the big picture goal. Staffing makes the best out of what resources are available, properly filling positions with most competent employees. Leading is guiding and motivating employees to work towards the organizational goals. Controlling is the assessment of how well the organization is doing at completing the tasks at hand; Allen talks about reflecting, or reviewing everything to make sure you are still focused on your “main” goal. The five functions of management can help you in your everyday life in many ways. Plan for the future, which goals in life you want to accomplish and the best way to accomplish them. Organize your everyday tasks, to make sure they are working towards your “life” goals. Staffing would be making do with what you have, using available resources wisely.
