In the United States, the fundamental contenders working participation stockrooms are Sam's Club and BJ's Wholesale Club . Costco utilizes around 174 , 000 full and part - time employees . In 2015 Costco had 81 million individuals . The whole history of Costco started with Sol Price and his child, Robert, opening the first Price Club stockroom on July 12 , 1976 on Morena Boulevard in San Diego, California, accordingly bringing forth an absolutely new idea : a retail distribution center club (Costco Wholesale Corporation, 2009 ) .

    HR STRATEGY There are few HR strategies that can be enhanced in the company – • Employee redistribution is key especially considering Costco still operates large scale operations in markets where the store has grown out of age and don’t perform as before . Redesigning of its pay structure to a reward based system while still maintaining the health insurance incentives . • There is need for automation in the less busy stores . An assessment of consumer trends should help the management have a general outlook on which stores have reclined consumer numbers due to changes in market demands in the area . • Its pay structure needs an adjustment . Many companies are shifting to performance based contracts to ensure there is improved consumer satisfaction and a competitive environment in the work place
