Point of Point Check Conversion • Point - of - purchase (POP) check conversion . This type of check conversion is also called electronic check by NACHA . The paper check is converted to an ACH payment at the merchant's cash register . • The consumer fills out a paper check and gives it to the cashier or retailer who scans it to capture the MICR line . The payment becomes an ACH debit entry transaction and is processed through an ACH . • According to NACHA, more than 38 million paper checks were converted into electronic ACH debits at retail locations in 2001 . The consumer may sign a receipt authorizing the electronic transaction and keep a copy as a record of the purchase, or the consumer may take back the scanned paper check, which is now void, as a receipt . • To implement this type of check conversion, the retailer needs the appropriate check scanner as well as an account and connectivity to an ACH processor .
