    Introduction The importance of management Managers influence all phases of modern organizations . Plant managers run manufacturing operations that produce the cloth we wear, the food we eat, and the automobiles we drive . Sales managers maintain a sale force that markets goods . Personnel managers provide organizations with a competent and productive workforce . The “job available” section in the classified advertisements of any major newspaper describes many different types of management activities and confirms the importance of management .

Many executives fail to grasp the difference between the two and therefore labor under a misapprehension about how to carry out their organizational duties . Although some managers are leaders and some leaders are managers, leading and managing are not identical activities .

The conventional wisdsom was that, as the “ second one in”, Glaxo shoud price Zantact 10 per cent below Tagamat . CEO Paul Girolam knew that Zantact was superior to Tagamat in terms of fewer drug interactions and side effects and more convenient dosing . Glaxo introduced Zantact at a significant price premium over Tagamat and still holds the market leader position .
