    4 answer key 3.7 Identify Irrelevant Details Directions: Read the paragraphs below and cross out the sentence or sen- tences that should be deleted because they contain irrelevant details. 1. I can get to my favorite weekend getaway in just under two hours. It takes my friend Marty only a half hour, but he does not have to face as much traffic as I do. First, I leave my house and take the south ramp to get on the highway. Then I travel east on Route 54 for 65 miles. Route 54 is designated a Scenic Highway, and I enjoy driving it. Route 54 comes to an end, and I take a left on US 37. Five miles after that, I usually stop to get some groceries at Lucy’s Little Store. After that, I continue another ten miles to the turn off that takes me up the hill to the cabin I rent on Indian Lake. 2. I am really proud of my first sports car. On the front I put a new vanity plate that says, “Smokin’ Hot.” It is a mirror-backed plate with metallic blue lettering, which matches the metallic blue of the car. I had it pin- striped with a thin line of smoke curling from the front quarter panels all the way down the sides to the rear quarter panels. My cousin Jimmy does awesome detail work and gave me a good deal on the paint job. On the front quarter panels, I installed chrome alloy side vents that swoop upward toward the hood. Above the side vents, on the outer edge of the hood, I put two chrome hood scoops with five vent slots. Once again, Jimmy came through for me and did not charge me any- thing over cost for the eye candy. Behind the quarter panel vents, the doors were trimmed out in chrome that matched the vents and my new 22-inch spoked chrome wheels. My dad says I wasted a lot of money, but he just does not understand the importance of a smoking hot car. 3. A recent survey at work rated the qualities of a good boss. I work at Talbot Productions, and three people in management recently left for other jobs. Being open to suggestions was the third most popular response. Next came being willing to support the people who work under the bosses. This included being helpful and giving constructive criticism. My boss, Anthony Hardinger, has never helped me, even though I have asked him to a bunch of times. The quality that was rated highest was recognition of good workers. Mr. Hardinger has hardly ever spoken to me, much less recognized that I have done a good job. 4. Downloading a free ringtone from a computer is an easy process. I recently got Rihana’s “Rude Boy,” and I love it. First, find a site that is trustworthy and offers the types of ringtones you want. Next, preview the ringtones and listen to the sound bytes to determine if the sound quality is adequate. After you find the ringtone you want, enter the name of your carrier and your cell phone number. Then, before you send the ringtone two your phone, make sure you have not agreed to receive any unwanted email subscription or push messages. I already get a lot of pushes I do not want from my carrier, advertising texting and calling deals. Finally, have the ringtone sent to your phone. TICKET to WRITE

Find and underline the topic sentence of each body paragraph. Then ask yourself which sentences are not relevant to what the writer expresses in the topic sentences (which sentences do not contribute to the paragraph’s unity) and cross them out. t hesis statement: To decide the national champion, the NCAA should replace the current system that uses a selection committee with a true playoff system. The way it works now, the final four football teams competing for the championship are decided by only 13 individuals. The people who make up this committee might not be objective, so rankings that come from them might not be objective, either. President Obama said that he is favor of a playoff system. Also, a team can lose early in the season and then be out of the running to be champion, even though it might improve the rest of the season. Here at Oak Grove State, we are currently 4-1, and fans hope we are not going to lose any other games. Look at last year’s records. Burton University lost the first game and then won all the rest of them. McCarty College lost its second game when its star quarterback was out with mono, and then it won all the rest by at least twenty points. A third reason to have a true playoff system is that sometimes schools schedule games against weaker opponents just so they can have a good record at the end of the season. If a school with a great team plays a school that has a lousy team, everybody knows that the great team will almost always win. I think that is what Bell A&T has done for years. It is not fair to schedule games against weaker teams just so your team can have a good record. A true playoff system would take into account all wins and losses and conference winners and could provide wildcard spots for independent teams with winning records. TICKET to WRITE

As identity theft increases, many people are using their cell phones instead of land lines. They believe information land lines often provide (caller ID numbers, name and address information listed in telephone books) makes their lives too open. What they do not realize, though, is that certain cell phone services provide access to information not only about callers’ names and addresses but also about the callers’ neighbors, address history, and a number of public records that relate to them. GS 2. All over the country, many colleges are facing budget cuts. Our college is no different. One way our administration can address this is by capping faculty and staff salaries. Another way is to increase tuition fees. The best way, however, is to save utility fees by shutting down dorms, offices, and the library during the times when classes are not in session, such as from December 23 to January 5. A 3. John Standers really wanted a job at Critman Industrials, and his uncle was able to pull some strings to get him an interview. Needless to say, John did not get the job after he arrived fifteen minutes late and came dressed in a shirt that had a coffee stain on the front. Six months later, John’s uncle arranged for another interview, but this time John was late again. Sometimes, people who get a second chance do not realize their good fortune and do not learn from their mistakes. BD 4. In the two years since Speedy Fuel and Food opened at the corner of Drury Lane and Highway 61, a number of problems have arisen. The location, often scattered with garbage, is un- sightly. Although the food it offers comes at a low price, the unsanitary conditions of the kitchen have been cited six times by the Health Department. Maybe the worst offense is the prices that Speedy Fuel advertises on its signs are often as much as five cents lower than the prices the pumps actually charge.
