Properties of Real Numbers and Their Application in Algebraic Expressions INTODUCTION A real number may b e either rational or irrational, eit her algebraic , positive, negative, or zero. Real numbers are used to measure continuous quantities. They may be expressed by decimal representations that have an infinite sequence of digits to the right of the decimal point . In mathematics, a real number is a value that represents a quantity along a continuous line. The real numbers include all the rational numbers, such as the integer −5 and the fraction 4/3, and all the irrational numbers such as √2 (1.41421356... the square root of two, an irrational algebraic number) and π (3.14159265..., a transcendental number). all number other than imaginary(complex) are real numbers. In the given assignment we will learn at some properties that apply to all real numbers. If we learn these properties, they will help to solve problems in algebra. Each property in detail ( Distribution , Coefficient , Removing parentheses) has been applied to an algebraic expression. BODY MATHS WORK PROPERTIES USED 2a(a – 5) + 4(a – 5) given expression 2a^2 - 10a + 4a - 20 The distributive property removes the parentheses. 2a^2 – 6a – 20 ( ANSWER ) Like terms are combined by adding coefficients 2w – 3 + 3(w – 4) – 5(w – 6) given expression 2w - 3 + 3w - 12 - 5w + 30 The distributive property removes the parentheses. 2w + 3w - 5w - 3 - 12 +30 Like terms are arranged together using the
