Master the Pharmacy Technician Certification PTCE Exam (2020) - Page 21 preview imageThePTCEconsistsof90questions,ofwhich80arescoredand10arenot(theseunscoredquestionsarenotidentified).Atotaloftwohoursisallottedfortheexam—1hourand50minutesofthistimeisallowedforthe90questions,whiletheremaining10minutesisutilizedforabeginningtutorialandfinalsurvey.Topasstheexam,youmustearnascoreof1400(witharangeofpossiblescoresof1000-1600).Thereisnosetnumberofquestionsyoumustanswercorrectlyonyourexam;thenumberdiffersfromtesttotestdependingontheresultsofalltesttakers.BeforetakingthePTCE,youmustfulfillspecificeligibilityrequirementsandapplyonline.Therequirementsforapplicationincludeahighschooldiploma(orGEDequivalentorforeigndiploma),aswellasafulldisclosureofanycriminalaction,whichincludesBoardofPharmacyregistrationorlicensureissues.ThecosttotakethePTCEis$129.Onceyourapplicationisapproved,youhave90daystotaketheexam.Ifyoucannottakeitwithinthe90days,youmustwithdrawyourapplication,oryoumayloseyourapplicationfee.Becausethisisacomputer-basedexam,schedulingcanbecompletedonlineorbyphoneandisdependentonyourlocaltestcenteravailability.Startingin2020,thePTCBwillrequireeithercompletionofaPTCB-recognizededucationortrainingprogramortheequivalentinworkexperiencetoqualifytotakethePTCE.Anattestationformwillbecompletedbypharmacytechniciantrainingprograms,whichwillidentifyiftheprogrammeetsthestandardsrequiredtobecomePTCB-recognized.ForexperiencedworkingpharmacytechnicianswhohavenotcompletedaPTCB-recognizedtrainingprogram,thetechnician’semployermustalsocompleteanattestationform.ThisformcontainsthesameknowledgerequirementsthatareusedinthePTCBeducationprogramsandisusedtodetermineiftheworkexperiencegainedisequivalentinskillsandknowledgethatwouldbeobtainedinaPTCB-recognizedprogram.NOTEPriorto2020,thePTCEwasstructuredtotestnineknowledgedomainsandareas.Basedona2016JobAnalysisStudy,theexamwasrestructuredintofourknowledgedomainsandareas.Formoreinformation,gotothePTCB’swebsiteatwww.ptcb.org.
