Identify how transnational actors, interest groups, public opinion, and themedia influenced September 11.Some transnational religious actors can be seen to helpadvance international order. Increasing and improving international order is said to bedependent on growing numbers of democratic countries, in accord with the wishes anddesigns of the dominant actors in international relations, such as the government of theUnitedStatesandotherWestern states.Ontheotherhand,theactionsofsometransnational religious actors, including terrorist organizations such as al-Qaeda havequite different ramifications for international order. Such groups explicitly reject and seektounderminethefoundationalnorms,values,institutionsandrulesthatunderpininternationalorderanditskeyinstitutions,suchastheUnitedNations.Sometransnational religious actors affect international order and security, especially networksof Islamic extremists and terrorists. Extremistpathologies present themselves in variousorder-challenging forms, including the 9/11 outrages in the USA. Increased religioustransnational activities are stimulated by globalization and especially the accompanyingcommunications revolution. This is a key factor in encouraging the current dynamicgrowth and development of religious transnational networks. The post-9/11 focus onextremist Islamist organizations reignited the ‘clash of civilizations’ controversy, whileserving partially to obscure the evolving transnational religious landscape with its impacton a variety of international issues.
