Gizmos Name: Date: Student Expicraticn Calorimetry Lab Directions: Follow the instructions to go through the simulation. Respond to the questions and prompts in the orange boxes. Vocabulary: calorie, calorimeter, joule, specific heal capacity Prior Knowledge Questions (Do these BEFORE using lhe Gizmo.) 1. The Lalin word caior means "heal,' and meter comes from the Greek word meaning "to measure." What do you think a calorimeter does? Measure heal 2. Where have you heard lhe word calorie before? What do you think a calorie is? I heard it when talking about food and daily calorie intake. Calories are something that provides energy and is unhealthy if taken too much. Gizmo Warm-up A calorimeter is an insulated container filled with a liquid, usually water. When a hot object is placed in the calorimeter, heat energy is transferred from lhe object to lhe water and the water heats up. Calorimeters can be used to find a substance s specific heat capacity. You will use lhe Calorimetry Lab Gizmo to determine lhe specific heal capacities of various substances. 1. On the SIMULATION pane, select Copper. Use the slider Io set its Mass to 200 g. Sei lhe Water mass to 200 g. Check that the Water temp is set to 30.0 = C and the copper's Temp is 90 : C. Select the GRAPH tab. and click Play { ► }. This is "Trial 1" A. What was the Final temperature of the copper and lhe waler? 34.96 : C B. How much did the temperature of the copper change? decreased 55.04 °C C. How much did the temperature of the water change? Increased 4.96 '"C 2. Specific heat capacity can be described as a substance's resistance Io temperature changes. Which substance has a greater specific heat capacity, copper or water? Explain.

Waler had a greater specific heal capacity as it increased less than copper. Copper's temperature changed by 55.04 : C while water's temperature changed by 4.96 c C. Activity A: Heat transfer Get the Gizmo ready: • Click Reset ( ). I Y f * 1 __ Question: What factors determine how heat energy transfers between objects? 1. Predict: In the Gizmo warm-up. you saw how 200 g of 90 a C copper transfers heat to 200 g of 30.0 C C water. A. How do you think increasing the waters mass would affect the final temperalure? It would bring it down as the water would nol heal up as much because there are more things to heal up. B How do you think decreasing the copper's mass would affect lhe final temperature? Less copper would lead to a low temperature. C. How do you think increasing or decreasing lhe copper's initial temperature would affect lhe final temperature? Increasing it would increase lhe final temperature Decreasing it would also decrease the final temperalure. 2. Collect dala: Use the Gizmo to determine the final temperature for each set-up listed below. Record your results in the tables. For each experiment, you will compare your results to lhe results you achieved in Trial 1 above. The final temp for that trial has already been filled oul for you. Notice that each time, only one factor changes. The changed factor is shown in red. Experiment Copper Water Final Temp. (°C) Initial Temp. (°C) Mass (g) Initial Temp. 31.65 c C 50 = C 2D0 g 30.0 C C 200 g 3. Analyze For each factor listed in the chart above, explain how the final temperature was changed and why you think that change occurred. A. What was the effect of increasing the water's mass? Final temperature decreases Ei What was the effect of decreasing the copper's mass? Final temperature decreases C. What was the effect of changing the initial temperature of the copper? Final temperature decreases 4. Draw conclusions: The amount that the water's temperature increases depends on llhe mass of the water and the amount of heal energy in the copper. A. How does changing the initial mass of the copper atfecl how much heat energy it has? Increasing lhe initial mass of copper also increases how much heat energy it has. B How does changing the initial temperature of the copper affect how much heat energy it has? Increasing the initial lemperalure of copper also increases the heal energy. 5. Apply: Many gyms and health clubs have sleam saunas, which are small steam-filled rooms. Traditionally, steam saunas have a container of heated rocks. A small ladle of water is poured on the rocks in order to make the sleam. A. Use what you have learned so far about heat transfer to explain how hoi rocks can be used Io make steam? The hoi rocks' heat energy transfers to lhe water making it warm or hoi. B Why do you Ihink only a small ladle-full of water is poured on the rocks at one time? To make the water become steam fasler than if all the waler was poured on the hot rocks al the same time.
