About the AuthorsAnthony Bruno, CCIE No. 2738, is an architect andtechnical resource manager with British Telecom (BT)with more than 27 years of experience in theinternetworking field. Previously, he worked forInternational Network Services (INS) and LucentTechnologies, and he was a captain in the U.S. Air Force.He has consulted for many enterprise and serviceprovider customers in the design, implementation, andoptimization of large-scale networks. Anthony leadsarchitecture and design teams in building next-generation networks for customers.Anthony completed a master of science degree inelectrical engineering at the University of Missouri–Rollain 1994 and a bachelor of science in electricalengineering at the University of Puerto Rico–Mayaguezin 1990. For the past 20 years, he has coauthored fiveeditions of theCCDA Official Cert Guidefor Cisco Press.Outside work, Anthony enjoys running marathons andSpartan obstacle races, and he has finished sevenIronman distance triathlons. Steve Jordan, CCIE No. 11293, is a principalarchitect with J. Network Architects and has 23 years ofexperience in the field of internetworking. IntroductionCongratulations! If you are reading this Introduction,then you have probably decided to obtain a Ciscocertification. Obtaining a Cisco certification will ensurethat you have a solid understanding of common industryprotocols along with Cisco’s device architecture andconfiguration. Cisco has a high network infrastructuremarket share of routers, switches, and firewalls, and aglobal footprint.Professional certifications have been an important partof the computing industry for many years and willcontinue to become more important. Many reasons existfor these certifications, but the most popularly citedreason is that they show the holder’s credibility. All otherfactors being equal, a certified employee/consultant/jobcandidate is considered more valuable than one who isnot certified.Cisco provides three levels of certifications: CiscoCertified Network Associate (CCNA), Cisco CertifiedNetwork Professional (CCNP), and Cisco CertifiedInternetwork Expert (CCIE). Cisco made changes to allthree certifications, effective February 2020. Thefollowing are the most notable of the many changes:

• The exams now include additional topics, such asprogramming.• The CCNA certification is no longer a prerequisitefor obtaining the CCNP certification.• CCNA specializations are not being offeredanymore.• The exams test a candidate’s ability to configureand troubleshoot network devices in addition to thecandidate’s ability to answer multiple-choicequestions.• The CCNP is obtained by taking and passing a Coreexam and a Concentration exam.• The CCIE certification requires candidates to passthe Core written exam before the CCIE lab can bescheduled.CCNP Enterprise candidates need to take and pass theImplementing and Operating Cisco Enterprise NetworkCore Technologies ENCOR 350-401 examination.
