CompTIA A+ Practice Questions Exam Cram Core 1 (220-1101) and Core 2 (220-1102) (2022) - Page 19 preview imagexviiCustomizing Your ExamsOnce you are in the exam settings screen, you can choose to take exams in oneof three modes:Study mode:This mode allows you to fully customize your exams andreview answers as you are taking an exam. This is typically the mode youwould use first to assess your knowledge and identify information gaps.Practice Exam mode:This mode locks certain customization options inorder to present a realistic exam experience. Use this mode when you arepreparing to test your exam readiness.Flash Card mode:This mode strips out the answers and presents youwith only the question stem. This mode is great for late-stage preparation, when you really want to challenge yourself to provide answers without thebenefit of seeing multiple-choice options. This mode does not provide thedetailed score reports that the other two modes provide, so it is not thebest mode for helping you identify knowledge gaps.In addition to these three modes, you will be able to select the source of yourquestions. You can choose to take exams that cover all of the chapters, or youcan narrow your selection to just a single chapter or the chapters that make upspecific parts in the book. All chapters are selected by default. If you want to nar-row your focus to individual chapters, simply deselect all the chapters and thenselect only those on which you wish to focus in the Objectives area. You can also select the exam banks on which to focus. Each exam bank comescomplete with a full exam of questions that cover topics in every chapter. Theexams printed in the book are available to you, as are two additional exams ofunique questions. You can have the test engine serve up exams from all banksor just from one individual bank by selecting the desired banks in the exambank area. There are several other customizations you can make to your exam from theexam settings screen, such as the time allowed for taking the exam, the numberof questions served up, whether to randomize questions and answers, whether toshow the number of correct answers for multiple-answer questions, and whetherto serve up only specific types of questions. If you find that figures or exhibits are missing, you might need to manually update your exams. To update a particular exam youhave already activated and downloaded, simply select the Tools tab and click theUpdate Products button. Again, this is only an issue with the desktop Windowsapplication. If you wish to check for updates to the Windows desktop version of the PearsonTest Prep exam engine software, simply select the Tools tab and click the UpdateApplication button. Doing so allows you to ensure that you are running the lat-est version of the software engine.Need Further Study?Consider taking a hands-on A+ course and be sure to see the following compan-ion products to this book:CompTIA A+ Core 1 220-1101 and Core 2 220-1102 Exam Cramby David L.Prowse (ISBN: 978-0-1376-3754-6)CompTIA A+ Core 1 220-1101 Complete Video Courseby David L. It also contains a small percentage of questionson cloud computing and virtualization. In this chapter, I briefly discuss how the exam is categorized, give yousome test-taking tips, and prepare you to take the three 220-1101practice exams that follow this chapter.Exam BreakdownThe CompTIA A+ Core 1 (220-1101) exam objectives are divided bydomain. Each domain makes up a certain percentage of the test. Thefive domains of the A+ 220-1101 exam and their respective percent-ages are listed in Table 1.1.TABLE 1.1220-1101 DomainsDomainPercentage of Exam1.0 Mobile Devices15%2.0 Networking20%3.0 Hardware25%4.0 Virtualization and Cloud Computing11%5.0 Hardware and NetworkTroubleshooting29%Total100%

CompTIA A+ Practice Questions Exam Cram Core 1 (220-1101) and Core 2 (220-1102) (2022) - Page 22 preview image2Chapter 1Chances are that when you take the real CompTIA exam, the questions will bebased on these percentages, but you never know. The questions are chosen atrandom, so you have to be prepared for anything and study all of the objectives. Each domain has several objectives. There are far too many to list in this book, butI recommend that you download a copy of the objectives for yourself. You can getthem from CompTIA’s A+ web page (https://www.comptia.org/certifications/a),and I link to them at my website (https://dprocomputer.com) as well.Let’s talk about each domain briefly.Domain 1.0: Mobile Devices (15%)CompTIA refers to any portable computers as mobile devices, including lap-tops, tablets, smartphones, and hybrid versions of those devices. This domaincomprises only 15% of the exam, but remember that every domain is important. You should be able to demonstrate the ability to install and configure laptophardware and software. You also should know how to operate laptops’ specialfunctions, such as dual displays, wireless, and Bluetooth. Finally, because of theexplosion of mobile devices in the tech world and the increased adoption ofbring your own device (BYOD) policies by companies, you need to understandthe hardware side of smartphones and tablets for the 220-1101 exam.Domain 2.0: Networking (20%)The Networking domain covers network standards, cabling, connectors, andtools. TCP/IP is also a big topic in this domain; you will undoubtedly see ques-tions on IP addresses, ports, and protocols. You should be able to install andconfigure a basic wired or wireless SOHO network and use the appropriate net-working tools. Plus, you should be able to describe the various types of serversand networking hardware available.Domain 3.0: Hardware (25%)The Hardware domain concerns building, upgrading, and maintaining a com-puter. The motherboard, CPU, and RAM are the guts of a desktop computer, soto speak. They are installed inside a computer case. You are required to understand motherboard form factors and compatibilityconcerns as well as the ports, connectors, and expansion slots of a motherboard. You should also know how to access, configure, and update the BIOS/UEFI andunderstand the relationship between the BIOS/UEFI, CMOS, and lithium battery.

CompTIA A+ Practice Questions Exam Cram Core 1 (220-1101) and Core 2 (220-1102) (2022) - Page 23 preview imageIntroduction to the 220-1101 Exam3The BIOS/UEFI is also known as UEFI/BIOS, or just BIOS or UEFI. You might see any ofthese terms on the A+ exams or in the IT field. Remember that the UEFI is a newer tech-nology that augments the BIOS and allows for more security and better communicationwith the operating system.NOTEThen there’s everything that connects to the motherboard: CPU and fan, RAM,expansion cards, and storage drives. Plus, there are all of the ports on a com-puter, such as USB, video, and audio ports. Finally, you should know peripheralssuch as monitors, printers, USB flash drives, and other devices that interact withthe computer.Domain 4.0: Virtualization and CloudComputing (11%)The Virtualization and Cloud Computing domain is new to the A+ Core 1 (220-1101) exam. Coming in at 11% of the exam—but still quite important—this domainsummarizes cloud-computing concepts such as common cloud models, cloud char-acteristics, and desktop virtualization. It also covers the purpose of virtual machines(VMs) and resource and security requirements. If you are not using VMs now, youwill be. And chances are that you already make use of some type of cloud-based ser-vices. This domain is considered to be an introduction to the cloud, but you shouldstudy it carefully because you will be dealing with the cloud and VMs often.Domain 5.0: Hardware and NetworkTroubleshooting (29%)Troubleshooting is key; it is the most vital ability a technician should possess. You need to understand how to troubleshoot hardware failures, bootup issues,no-display obstacles, network connectivity difficulties, and, of course, printingproblems. This is the crux of the exam (both A+ exams, to be accurate), and youneed to study and practice accordingly.Expect one question out of four (or more) to be based on a troubleshootingscenario. Practice the questions in this book, understand the concepts, and—importantly—practice the topics on real computers in a hands-on way when-ever possible. Hands-on experience plays a big role in troubleshooting, andCompTIA recommends that a test-taker have 12 months of hands-on experi-ence in the lab or field.

CompTIA A+ Practice Questions Exam Cram Core 1 (220-1101) and Core 2 (220-1102) (2022) - Page 24 preview image4Chapter 1Remember this: Troubleshooting is a huge portion of what you do as a computertechnician. To increase your job security, you need to be a good troubleshooter.Today’s CompTIA A+ exams reflect this concept by incorporating many para-graph-based, scenario-oriented troubleshooting questions. You need to imagineyourself in the situation and think carefully about how to fix the problem. Onething that can aid you in this process is the CompTIA A+ six-step troubleshoot-ing process. Memorize it!Step 1.Identify the problem.Gather information from the user, identify user changes, and, ifapplicable, perform backups before making changes.Inquire regarding environmental or infrastructure changes.Step 2.Establish a theory of probable cause. (Question the obvious.)If necessary, conduct external or internal research based onsymptoms.Step 3.Test the theory to determine the cause.Once the theory is confirmed, determine the next steps toresolve the problem. If the theory is not confirmed, establish a new theory or esca-late.Step 4.Establish a plan of action to resolve the problem and imple-ment the solution.Refer to the vendor’s instructions for guidance.Step 5.Verify full system functionality and, if applicable, implementpreventative measures.Step 6.Document the findings, actions, and outcomes.Always consider corporate policies, procedures, and impacts before implementing changes.NOTEI really can’t stress enough the importance of this domain. Practice on real sys-tems and be ready to troubleshoot!

CompTIA A+ Practice Questions Exam Cram Core 1 (220-1101) and Core 2 (220-1102) (2022) - Page 25 preview imageIntroduction to the 220-1101 Exam5Test-Taking TipsMy first recommendation is to take the exams slowly. Don’t rush through, espe-cially on the first exam. Carefully read each question. Some questions are trickyby design. Others may seem tricky if you lack knowledge in certain areas. Stillother questions are somewhat vague, and that is intentional as well. You need toplace yourself in the scenario of the question. Think of yourself actually install-ing a CPU and heat sink, or imagine that you are upgrading a video card. Picturein your head the steps you must take to accomplish what the question is askingof you. Envision what you do with computers step by step, and the answers willcome more easily to you.Next, read throughallof the answers. Don’t just jump on the first one thatseems correct to you. Look at each answer and ask yourself whether it is rightor wrong. And if it is wrong, define why it is wrong. Using this approach helpsyou eliminate wrong answers in the search for the correct answer. When youhave selected an answer, be confident in your decision. Finally, don’t get stuck on any one question. You can always mark it and returnto it later. This advice especially applies to performance-based questions andlonger questions. I offer more tips as we progress through the book, and I sum-marize all test-taking tips at the end of this book.Getting Ready for the PracticeExamsThe next three chapters feature practice exams based on the 220-1101 exam.Every exam is followed by in-depth explanations. Be sure to read them carefully.Don’t move on to another exam until you understand the first one. By that Imean you should be scoring 90% or higher on the exam (without memorizingthe answers). Really understand the concepts before moving on to another exam. This makes you an efficient test-taker and allows you to benefit the most fromthis book.Consider timing yourself. Give yourself 90 minutes to complete each exam.Write down your answers on a piece of paper. When you are finished, if there isstill time left, review your answers for accuracy. Each exam is more difficult than the one before it. Don’t get overconfident ifyou do well on the first exam; your skills will be tested more thoroughly as youprogress. And don’t get too concerned if you don’t score 90% on the first try.

Keep study-ing and practicing! After each exam is an answer key, followed by in-depth answers/explanations.Don’t skip the explanations, even if you think you know the concept. I ofteninsert little tidbits of knowledge that are on the periphery of the concept; thesetidbits help you build a stronger foundation of knowledge in general. In otherwords, I might branch off the main topic in order to give you a clearer, biggerpicture of the 220-1101 exam and of the tech world in general. So take a deep breath, and let’s go!
