A small firm in1992 initially set up to license patents obtained by chemistry professor Dr. Riordan, RiordanManufacturing has grown into a billion dollar multinational manufacturing company (RiordanManufacturing, 2013).This paper will identify Riordan’s manufacturing strategies, illustrate thecurrent supply chain, describeand applypotential lean production principles, and use forecastingtools to develop plans for production and schedules.Manufacturing StrategyRiordan Manufacturing’s intranet providedaccess to a number of documents andspreadsheets detailing the current business and desired direction of the future growth of thecompany. In 2005, the Finance & Accounting department of Riordan recorded the inventory onSeptember 30th.Table 1.1 belowlists how many of each part made by Riordan is on hand.Clearly, Riordan is operating with a Level manufacturing Strategy. In this pure strategy, Riordanemployeeswillbenefit from stable work hours at the costs of potentially decreased customerservice levelsand increased inventory costs(Jacobs & Chase, 2011, p. 566).Further evidenceof this strategy exists inRiordan’s 2004 Operating Budget identifying forecasted wages andsalariesbeing even throughout the year (Riordan Manufacturing, 2013).A review of Riordan’sinvoices from 2005 illustrates the potential opportunities to develop a mixed strategy that canbenefit some consistent product sales with some more volatile patterns in sales (RiordanManufacturing, 2013).
