What is Depression?There is no single cause of depression. It can occur for a variety ofreasons, and it has many different triggers. Depression affects how people think,feel and act. Depression makes it more difficult to manage from day to day andinterferes with studies, work, and relationships. Depression could lead tochemical dependency and substance abuse if it is not treated and maintained.Depression is not a illness that goes away but depression can be controlleddepending upon the treatments, medication and therapy sessions. A depressedperson can control the rollercoasters of emotions if they comply with the help thats offered to them. As hard as it may be to attend sessions and take medicationsprescribed, it is important because depression can get worse and sometimes canlead to fatality.Symptoms/defining characteristicsof chosen illness.The persistent feeling of sadness or loss of interest that characterizesmajor depression can lead to a range of behavioral and physical symptoms. These mayinclude changes in sleep, appetite, energy level, concentration, daily behavior, or self-esteem. Depression can also be associated with thoughts of suicide. People withdepression tend to want to be alone for most of their time because anyone else'shappiness or great mood does not make them any better. Although, it helps them to bearound someone that is positive and helps the depressed person to express theirfeelings and trust that no judgment about their thoughts will not be insulted. A depressedindividual needs a person to listen and have a positive attitude while they releaseemotions and any negative thoughts they may be experiencing.Characteristics of depression can be noticed if the person is always alone, hasno interaction with others and has a nonchalant attitude towards their emotions.Activities with friends/families are not an option for a depressed person, they tend to feelthat they're always being judged or just not go enough to engage in outings with others.When talking to a person with depression, one has to be very selective on theconversation because depressed people often feel targeted or offensive.
