RST 200 DISCUSSION #5: Life and Death Healthcare is a fundamental human right, and all individuals and communities should have access to the health services they need. Unfortunately, in the United States, that is not the case. With no universal healthcare system, some have no health insurance, or they pay for it out of pocket, causing them to use up their life savings, sell assets, or borrow, destroying their futures and often those of their children. The most affected seem to be the marginalized in society, they are the ones that don't have the same access to health care as the non marginalized. Most democrats are for some form of government healthcare, whereas it seems most republicans are opposed. "Although there is disagreement about what actions should be taken on most political and economic issues, there is general agreement on the basic human right to good health" (de la Torre, 208). The Coronavirus shines a light on the problems in the United States healthcare system since so many people became unemployed they also lost health insurance. Employers can not keep the same coverage for remaining employees because they can not afford it. Healthcare is a business and "continues to be a profit-making venture" (DeLa Torre 217). Healthcare workers are putting their lives on the line every day, not always having the proper equipment to protect themselves against Covid-19. " The U.S. death toll from COVID-19 hit 900,000 on Friday 2/4/22, less than two months after eclipsing 800,000. The two-year total, as compiled by Johns Hopkins University, is greater than the population of Indianapolis, San Francisco, or Charlotte, North Carolina" (Kennedy and Sweet). With these kinds of numbers how can the US not re-evaluate the healthcare system and make changes?
