focuses on how IT will help the business achieve its goals and includes three sections. The demand section clarifies the business context — how the business will win, what business capabilities are needed and IT's contribution to that success. The control section outlines how decisions will be made and how behaviors will be monitored to align with demand. The supply section details the services that will be provided, the enterprise architecture migration needed to support the business capabilities, the IT human capital development needed to meet business goals and the strategic approach to sourcing. What IT Strategic Planning Means to CIOs The discipline of strategic planning focuses on developing strategies to help the business win. CIOs should consider these points before beginning a strategic planning initiative:  Purpose: Identify and highlight the purpose of the strategy and the audience — that is, the primary target of the strategy, and the other key stakeholders and their roles.  Scope: Identify what this strategy will cover in terms of time periods, functional areas, business units and enterprises.  Process: Determine how much of whose time will be used over what time period to create the strategy and how the process dovetails with enterprise wide planning.  Outside - In: Think about the underlying business model, other businesses with a similar model, and what you can learn from them to apply to your strategy.
