Exploring Gothic Art and Architecture: From Chartres Cathedral to Early Renaissance Works Compare and contrast the architectural features and artistic styles present in Chartres Cathedral and the works of Giotto di Bondone and Nicolas Pisano. In your answer, focus on how Gothic elements manifest in these works, as well as how Giotto and Pisano blend earlier artistic traditions with their own innovations. Discuss the significance of these elements within the context of medieval art and architecture. Your response should be at least 500 words. Scenario #1: For a person to get to the apse of Chartres cathedral as they walk through the central portal they would see the nave of the cathedral and what is called the labyrinth. As you continue to walk through you would then see the transept that is like a crisscrossing hallway that is shaped like a cross or crucifix. A small interior flying buttress would also be seen as you continue to walk towards the cathedral apse. You will then see the cathedral columns located on both sides of the cathedral nave. You will also arrive at another nave which is the area in a church where the people typically sit for the cathedral service. When you eventually get to the cathedral apse you will see a large statue of the black virgin and lots of stained glass windows surrounding the apse. There will also be lots of gothic arches which are arches that are pointed at the top instead of being round at the top. Scenario #2
