    10 Fore word Con grat u la tions! If you have picked up this book, you are con sid er ing ap ply ing to a nurs ing or al lied health school. This is an ex cit ing step! Your ca reer in health care will pro vide you with many re ward ing ex pe ri ences and op por tu ni ‐ ties. I speak from per sonal ex pe ri ence. Early in my ca reer as a nurse, I was car ing for a client newly di ag nosed with stage 4 lung can cer. The care team had ad dressed his symp toms: cough, short ness of breath, fa tigue, and weight loss among oth ers. The physi cian had dis cussed the treat ment plan. The so cial worker had of fered her ser vices. Thanks to my ed u ca tion, I un der stood the di ag no sis and prog no sis—the sci ence be hind the ma lig nancy. I un der stood that sim ple reme dies would not elim i nate the chronic cough. I un der stood that the dys p nea and fa tigue were in evitable and that treat ment op tions were lim ited. I also un der stood that no one had taken the time to be with the client—to sit qui etly and give sup port, to ask ques tions and lis ten. In your role as a care provider, you will have the op por tu nity to of fer client-cen tered care. You will give peo ple re spect, sen si tiv ity, and open com mu ni ca tion. Car ing for this man dur ing his jour ney did not feel like work. It was the most re ward ing ef fort I had ever un der taken. Be cause their stu dents will some day be en trusted with the well-be ing of other peo ple, health care pro grams want strong

    11 stu dents. This only makes sense: your de gree pro gram will cul mi nate in car ing for clients who will de pend on you for their health and maybe their life. We do not make or sell things. In stead, it is peo ple and fam i lies, young and old, well and sick, who get our at ten tion. I teach in a two-year RN pro gram, so I fully ap pre ci ate the im por tance of well- pre pared stu dents. Nurs ing and al lied health care pro grams are rig or ous. I have high stan dards, as will your in struc tors. This is why school ad mis sions can be very com pet i tive. To weigh the qual i fi ca tions of ap pli cants, many schools re ‐ quire can di dates to take ATI’s Test of Es sen tial Aca demic Skills (TEAS ® ). The TEAS mea sures com pe ten cies in read ing, math, sci ence, and lan guage use. Your TEAS score quan ti fies your aca demic pre pared ness and test-tak ing skills, and it is an im por tant in di ca tor of your po ten tial to suc ceed in school. Your nurs ing or al lied health pro gram will chal lenge you in ways that other classes have not. A lot of in for ma tion will be thrown at you. You will do more aca demic read ing than you have ever done be fore, and study ing will re quire more than mem o riza tion. You must use your un der stand ing of the knowl ‐ edge of your field to rec og nize im por tant facts you en counter in real-life sit u a tions and then draw sound con clu sions. Es ‐ pe cially as you move to the clin i cal set ting, you will be mak ing crit i cal de ci sions for your clients based on in for ma ‐ tion you gather. You will also need to use math. If you want to de ter mine the cor rect dose of med i ca tion for a client, you will need to be able to set up and com pute pro por tions. You can not trust the

    12 com puter to do this—you are re spon si ble. In any health care ca reer, you are com mit ting to life long learn ing, which means read ing and eval u at ing re search stud ies. There fore, an un ‐ der stand ing of sta tis tics is key. Your ca reer may take you into man ag ing your own busi ness or be ing a con sul tant, and then arith metic and al ge bra skills will be im por tant to you as a busi nessper son. Health care prac tice re quires sci ence—anatomy and phys i ol ogy, bi ol ogy, and chem istry—to un der stand your clients’ med i cal con di tions. You may need to un der stand the im pli ca tions of fluid bal ance, in ter pret lab o ra tory and ra di ol ogy tests, and know what ef fect med i ca tions can have in the body. With a good sci en tific ed u ca tion, your as sess ment of the client, in ter pre ta tion of data, and se lec tion of in ter ven tions will be based on ev i dence-based prac tice, not on what “feels right.” You will need strong com mu ni ca tion skills in school and through out your ca reer as you speak and write to clients and col leagues. Us ing the cor rect word is crit i cal to say what you mean to say, and you will be judged on your use of gram ‐ mar. In emails and in phone con ver sa tions, your con fi dence and ex per tise must come through so peo ple view you as some one they can de pend on. I say these things not to make you ner vous and ques tion your de ci sion, but to em pha size the need to pre pare for the TEAS. The TEAS gives you an op por tu nity to show schools your aca ‐ demic skills and abil ity to think like a health care pro fes ‐ sional. It gives you a chance to demon strate that you are

    13 pre pared for the cour ses ahead of you so you can gain ad mis ‐ sion to the pro gram of your choice. Get ting into your school is just the first step to ward a life time of op por tu ni ties. In deed, my nurs ing ed u ca tion opened doors I didn’t even imag ine when I was fill ing out my ap pli ca tions. While my ini tial jobs were in clin i cal set ‐ tings, I have held ti tles such as Nurse Man ager, Clin i cal Re im burse ment Spe cial ist, and Sub ject Mat ter Ex pert. Be cause of my health care ex per tise and skills, I have been able to pur sue con sult ing, busi ness own er ship, train ing, nurs ing ed ‐ u ca tion, and pub li ca tion writ ing and edit ing. The op por tu ni ‐ ties in health care were so ex cit ing and my love of learn ing so deep that af ter earn ing my RN, I pur sued ad di tional cre ‐ den tials. To day, I proudly add PhD and APRN, CNP af ter my name. Who knows what you will be do ing in 10, 20, or 30 years? There are so many pos si bil i ties! I en cour age you to get the most that you can from this Ka plan TEAS book so that you can get into the pro gram of your choice. Be ing a health care pro fes sional is about help ing peo ple—you will make a last ing dif fer ence in the lives of oth ers.
