Evaluating the Effectiveness of SENSA: A Critical Analysis and Experimental Design 1) Evaluate the claims made about the effectiveness of the SENSA product. Based on your analysis, explain why these claims might be categorized as pseudoscientific rather than scientifically grounded. Consider aspects such as emotional appeal, confirmation bias, and the lack of a scientific mechanism Answer: I would describe the claims made about SENSA as being based more on pseudoscience than on science itself. This is a product that is aimed squarely at the general public. Its claims are designed to appeal to the emotion of the viewer (reader) rather than to provide actual, scientific conclusions. Another major red flag for pseudoscience is confirmation - bias. While the article discusses the success of the product, it makes no mention of the instances where the product does not work. A naïve reader could easily infer that SENSA always works, which is not true. Finally, there is a complete lack of explicit mechanisms. That is, there is no mention of how or why the product actually works. 2) Design an experiment to test the effectiveness of the SENSA product for weight loss. Describe the groups involved, the variables to control, the duration of the study, and how you would interpret the results. Answer: There would need to be two groups. The first group would be for people that use SENSA with the desire to lose weight, and there would also be a control group of people that want to lose weight and do not use SENSA. I would attempt to make both groups as equal as possible in all other areas (such as exercise, sleep, calorie intake to weight ratio, etc.). The study would need to last for at least 3 - 4 months, since conventional wisdom is that losing more than one or one and a half pounds per week is not healthy. At the end of the study, a comparison would be made between the two groups. If both groups lost roughly the same amount of weight, then it could be concluded that SENSA had minimal if any contribution to
