Introduction and Explanation of the Book If you are reading this introduction, you are probably preparing to take the AP Psychology exam. If so, congratulations! The content assessed on this exam can help us understand ourselves and empathize with others. Psychology is a fascinating field, and studying for the AP Psychology exam will help you make sure you understand and can apply these concepts in potentially useful ways. High school and college psychology teachers work hard every year to try to make sure that the AP Psychology exam is a reliable and valid test of your knowledge of college-level psychology content (and if you don’t know what the terms “reliable” and “valid” mean yet, you will soon!). The purpose of this book is to help you practice multiple-choice items that are as similar as possible to the multiple-choice items you will see on the actual AP Psychology exam. We are experienced AP Psychology teachers who have been involved with the AP Psychology exam for over 20 years. We used everything we know about AP Psychology content and the AP Psychology exam to create over 600 multiple-choice items (whew!) that will help you practice exactly the kinds of items you will see on the exam. It is also important that you know what you will not find in this book: the purpose of this book is not to help teach you the content covered on the exam. Hopefully you had the opportunity to participate in an AP Psychology course at your school, and that class included access to a college-level introductory psychology textbook. If you are looking for other resources that can help you review the content involved in the AP Psychology exam, Barron’s AP Psychology Premium may be a useful resource. The purpose of this book is to help you review examples of the kinds of multiple-choice

items you will encounter on the exam and practice answering many different kinds of questions. This Q & A book focuses on one part of the AP Psychology exam: the 100 multiple-choice items you will see on the test. Your performance on these multiple-choice items will determine two-thirds of your overall score on the exam, so if you use this book to become an expert at answering these kinds of questions, you will improve your score (and learn a lot about important psychology concepts!). The other part of the AP Psychology exam is the Free-Response Question (FRQ) section. The FRQs will ask you to write about how psychological concepts apply to specific situations. For more information about the FRQ portion of the exam, refer to that chapter in Barron’s AP Psychology Premium—it includes sample FRQs and answers along with tips about how to write your answers. Finally, we want to explain why we wrote this book in the way we did. Our first step was to do some research on AP Psychology multiple-choice items. We analyzed past AP Psychology exams in order to better understand the multiple-choice items that appear on the exam. We analyzed hundreds of actual AP Psychology multiple-choice items, and this analysis uncovered categories of items that no other exam preparation book addresses. We used these categories to write the questions for this book, and if you understand and practice items in each of these categories, you will be much better prepared for the AP exam. While writing this book, College Board revised the AP Psychology exam and course description. We looked through these changes carefully and made sure that the items we wrote aligned with the new course description. One change was the focus on specific course skills. We have written questions from each skill category so you will have lots of opportunities to practice. We have also included information with each question that will help you see how that item aligns with the new course description (for more information, see the “Revised Course Description” section below). THE ANALYSIS You already know that you can expect multiple-choice questions from specific units to appear on the AP exam. The following table shows the

breakdown of multiple-choice items in this book based on specific topics. This breakdown also mirrors the proportion of items from each chapter on the AP exam. Unit Chapter Number of Items Percentage of Items El —— Behavior Behavior ————— RC Perception Perception ET CR [SN Differences EE Psychology Psychology Emotion, and Emotion I Psychological Disorders But there is another way to think about the different “types” of multiple- choice items you will be answering. We examined almost 400 released items from four of the most recently publicly released AP exams to see if they fell into specific “categories” or “types.” Through this analysis we determined that AP Psychology items can be categorized into the following groups: sims [ovotioms |
Page 15 Read page 15 as text
Research Methods 9% of items Stimulus Perspectives 3% 7% Research Methods q 9% < Names 11% Definitions 2% Scenarios \ 28% A Note About the Categories Many of the released AP Psychology questions we analyzed could be placed into more than one category. AP Psychology questions often require knowing the definition of a term, or analyzing a scenario, but also involve names of famous psychologists or different research methods or psychological perspectives. As we categorized items we used our judgment to place each item into the category we felt was most appropriate. It’s not important that every item is in the “right” category—the purpose of this book is to give you experience answering many questions in each category. As you work your way through the book, don’t worry if you encounter an item in a “Definition” section that seems like it could also be in the “Scenario” section, or vice versa. This book provides you with dozens of questions in each of these categories, so you’ll become an expert in thinking through every type of item, and that expertise will help you on the actual AP Psychology exam! Also, as you work through this book you’ll find some items that ask about the same concept in different ways. Two or three definition items may ask
Page 16 Read page 16 as text
about the same concept—one item may ask you to identify the right definition, and the next item may ask you to match the right term to a definition. We purposely included these “variations” of similar items so that you can gain experience answering different kinds of items about the same concept. Revised Course Description The new AP Psychology Course Description outlines the content included in the nine units used in this book (see the Table of Contents) and a description of skills students should learn during their AP Psychology class: + Skill 1: Concept Understanding—students should be able to recognize definitions of and apply important concepts. Specifically, students should practice defining/applying concepts (Skill 1a), using concepts to explain behavior in context (Skill 1b), and apply theories and psychological perspectives in context (Skill 1c). + Skill 2: Data Analysis—students should be able to interpret and analyze numerical data. + Skill 3: Scientific Investigation—students should be able to analyze/critique examples of psychological research studies and conclusions from those studies. Based on the new AP Psychology Course Description, you can expect that 75-80% of the multiple-choice questions will be Skill 1 questions, 8-12% will focus on Skill 2, and 12-16% will be Skill 3 questions. In order to help you practice these skills, we “keyed” every one of the 600 multiple-choice items to the skills. In the Answers section of this book, you will find an explanation of the correct answer to the question, why the incorrect answers are incorrect, and which skill (Skill 1a, 1b, 1c, Skill 2, or Skill 3) is most applicable for that question. We used our experience and best judgment to categorize the questions according to these skills. You will find that often questions we have labeled as “Definitions” fit into the Skill 1a category where you will be asked to define or apply a specific concept. Scenario questions are most likely Skill 1b or 1c. The way to distinguish them is to look for what the question focuses on. If the Scenario question asks only about a specific concept, it is a Skill
