Border Patrol Entrance Exam (2017) - Page 9 preview imageInordertofullyunderstandallaspectsoftheBorderPatrolAgentposition,itisnecessarytobrieflyreviewitsproudtradition.Asearlyas1904,theU.S.ImmigrationServiceassignedatokenforceofmountedinspectorstopatrolthesouthernborderoftheUnitedStatestopreventillegalcrossings.Theofficerswereuntrainedandfewinnumber,andauthoritieswereunabletostemtherisingtideofillegalaliens.InMarch1915,Congressauthorizedaseparategroupofinspectorscalledmountedguards,ormountedinspectors,whooperatedfromElPaso,TX.Theseguards,whonevernumberedmorethan75,rodeonhorsebackandpatrolledasfarwestasCalifornia.OnMay28,1924,CongressestablishedtheU.S.BorderPatrolaspartoftheImmigrationBureau,adivisionoftheDepartmentofLabor.In1925,patrolareaswereexpandedtoincludeover2,000milesofseacoastextendingalongtheGulfandFloridacoasts.Initially,theBorderPatrolrecruitedmanyoftheearlyforceof450officersfromtheTexasRangersandlocalsheriffsandtheirdeputies.Theseofficersknewthelandandthedangersitpresented.AppointeesfromtheCivilServiceRegisterofRailroadMailClerkssupplementedthisrough-and-readycrew.TheU.S.governmentinitiallyprovidedtheBorderPatrolAgentsabadge,arevolver,andanannualsalaryof$1,680.Sinceitsinception,theBorderPatrolhasachievedanalmostlegendarystatusinthelawenforcementcommunity.Asinthepast,BorderPatrolAgentstodaycontinuetoprovideacriticalserviceastheirdutieshaveevolvedtoencompassmuchmorethanpreventingillegalentryintotheUnitedStates.WhattheWorkofaBorderPatrolAgentIsReallyAboutEventoday,theworkofaBorderPatrolAgentisdifficult,diverse,and,moreoftenthannot,extremelyhazardous.Thispositionisbestsuitedtotheruggedindividualistwhoisself-assured,welleducated,andwelltrained.Theimportanttaskofprotectingoursovereignbordersinahumaneandcompassionateway,consistentwithAmericanidealsandsecurityneeds,has
