However, in recent timesit is used for permanent termination.Temporary dismissals are usually a result of economicconditions or shifts in organization’s production. Temporarily dismissed employees are asked toreturn to the job when the conditions change and the demand for their job arises. On the otherhand, permanently terminated employees are usually laid off because of their poor performanceand hence the organization does not want such employees back in the job.Permanentterminations can also result from employee misconduct like theft and violation of standards.Ineither case, laying off the employees is one of the most difficult tasksfor any manager. Usuallydecisions involve cost benefit analysis, however, in this task the managers have to deal with thehuman resources and their emotions.
