Atando cabos5e Instructor’s Resource Manual1IntroductionIntroduction to the Instructor’s Resource ManualTheAtando cabosInstructor’s Resource Manual is intended to help with the organizationof the course and the material presented in the program. Here,the following may be found:sample syllabi, sample lesson plans, an explanation of the way in which this program integratesthe ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, audio scripts for the textbook, audio scripts for the StudentActivities Manual, and transcripts of the5thedition videos.Atando cabosis an intermediate program that has been developed to help students movefrom the beginner’s level of language learning to the low advanced level as defined by theACTFL Proficiency Guidelines. Its aim is to help students develop fluency, as well as accuracy,by internalizing and expanding the vocabulary and grammatical structures learned in a lowerlevel. To achieve this goal, the program presents different topics of discussion that requirestudents to think critically and present their ideas in pairs, in a group or to the entire class. Thetopics presented in each chapter are the basis for class discussionsandthe grammatical exercises.Students are asked to solve problemsor carry out taskswhile they internalize grammaticalstructures and learn about the values andmodus vivendiof the Hispanic world. The activitiesrequire students to develop the habit of thinking in the foreign language when they formulatetheir own ideas. Throughout the program,they utilize a wide range of language functionswhileusing the language at their disposal to describe, inform, express an opinion, convince someone,argue a position, hypothesize about a situation, and other language functions. These appearthroughout the book in cyclical fashion.TheAtando cabosprogram helps students to progress from communicating in simplewords and sentences to speaking and writing using more complex sentence structures andparagraphs. Most of the exercises are communicative in nature and require some thinking on the

The goal ofeach activity is to practice authentic communication, as opposed tosimply learning to manipulatelanguage structures. Many of the activities in the chapter give students opportunities to speakfreely instead of constraining them to the use of a single grammatical structure. This enablesthem to express themselves in a creative manner by giving priority to the communication of anidea, an opinion, a feeling or an emotion, a wish or a hope, over the practice of particularvocabulary items or grammatical structures. In other words, this is a content-based book, not agrammar-driven program.Each chapter is structured around a particular theme that presents a topic from differentangles and relates that particular topic to the Hispanic culture. For example, when talking aboutthe environment, there is information about the efforts being made to protect the flora and faunaof Costa Rica as well as the problems of pollution in Mexico City. At the same time, there aresub-themes discussed in the same chapter, such asgreen buildings, recycling or theexperienceofliving inBuenos Airesas seen through the eyesofBorges. A particular student may be moremotivated to talk about one of these topics rather than another. It is hoped that all students willfind something that is of interest to them personally to the point of forgetting that they are usinga second language and are motivated to speak because they feel passionately about the subject.Cultural information is presented in a feature calledVentana al mundoas well as themarginal notes calledBoletín. The information provided in these segments can be used as awarm-upsto initiate discussion on a particular subject, or it may be integrated as part of classdiscussions, debates, round tables or a student’s presentation.In summary,theAtando cabosprogram is a content-based book that integrates languageand culture by providing readings and activities that are student-centered and personalized. It
